Dr Phil Recommends That You Find a Local Chiropractor!

A Naperville and Aurora Chiropractor Can Help You!

A Naperville and Aurora Chiropractor Can Help You!

Chiropractic Care moved into the national spotlight last month when Dr Phil did a special featuring Dr Fabrizio Mancini, DC.  Dr Mancini is the president of Parker College of Chiropractic and author of a new book about natural healing.

During the special, Dr Mancini discussed Chiropractic and it’s place in wellness care and healing naturally.  Dr Phil even revealed that he has been under Chiropractic Care for ten years and continues regular chiropractic check ups as part of his wellness plan.

Chiropractic Care is more than just back and neck pain care, it is also a way to keep your body functioning at its best so you can stay healthy.  Many of my patients think of Chiropractic Care only as a way to reduce pain and when their pain goes away they don’t think they need any more care.  In some cases, these patients will eventually return because the same daily stressors are present and in time will cause the same problem to return or perhaps a new problem will result.   Think of the thinks your body is subject to every day.

Ask your self these questions…

  • Do you have a poor diet?
  • Do you drink enough water?
  • Do you smoke or ingest other toxic substances?
  • Do you exercise regularly and properly?
  • Do you stretch daily?
  • Do you lift incorrectly or have repetitive stress?

The list goes on and on!  All of these daily stresses can affect your muscles and spinal alignment.  If you don’t have regular check ups, the spine can become overwhelmed and not function the way it was designed to work.  When the spine becomes misaligned and doesn’t  move efficiently, it can begin to put pressure on the nerves which can result in interference in the nervous system.

The body depends of the correct messages from the nervous system, that is why it is so critical to keep your spine healthy and functioning efficiently.  Chiropractic care and a healthy lifestyle can help you feel better and stay active.

Chiropractic Care is Recommended Before Back Surgery for Chronic Low Back Pain!

Chiropractic Care for Chronic Low Back Pain

Chiropractic Care First For Low Back Pain!

A more natural approach for the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain is becoming increasing more popular.  New Guidelines from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center outline a plan for conservative treatment plan before back surgery is considered.  Treatments such as Chiropractic Care and Physical therapy must be administered for at least three months before surgery would be considered.  In the past, medical doctors and hospitals were not as open to conservative care and would recommend only medication, injections, and or surgery.

Read more about these guidelines in the original Article from Dynamic Chiropractic on May 20, 2012.

Chiropractic Before Spine Surgery for Chronic LBP

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Health Plan mandates conservative care before considering surgery for chronic LBP cases.

By Peter W. Crownfield, Executive Editor

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Health Plan, a health maintenance organization affiliated with the university’s School of Medicine, has adopted landmark guidelines for the management of chronic low back pain.

As of Jan. 1, 2012, candidates for spine surgery must receive “prior authorization to determine medical necessity,” which includes verification that the patient has “tried and failed a 3-month course of conservative management that included physical therapy, chiropractic therapy, and medication.” Surgery candidates also must be graduates of the plan’s LBP health coaching program. The program features a Web-based decision-making tool designed to help plan members “understand the pros and cons of surgery and high-tech radiology.” It is the first reported implementation of such a policy by a health care plan.

Putting a Clamp on the Soaring Rates of Spine Surgery

According to the December 2011 issue of the UPMC Health Plan Physician Partner Update, which informed participating providers of the new guidelines and the rationale for their implementation, “We feel strongly that this clinical initiative will improve the quality of care for members who are considering low back surgery, and that it will facilitate their involvement in the decision-making process.” The update also noted, “Surgical procedures for low back surgery performed without prior authorization will not be reimbursed at either the specialist or the hospital level.”

A Conservative Strategy for Managing Chronic LBP

PCP discussion related to self-care consisting of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE)

Screening for psychosocial factors or “yellow flags” and incorporate behavioral interventions as appropriate with other treatment interventions

Education on self-management techniques – functional ability assessment and education on return to work / usual activity and function

Enrollment and graduation from UPMC Health Plan Health Coach’s Low Back Pain Program (mandatory) which may also include participation in other programs such as weight loss, physical activity, tobacco cessation, depression and/or stress

Early referral to chiropractor or physical therapist, but before advanced imaging, for manipulation/mobilization; stabilization exercises; directional preference strategies – member and/or provider movements that abolish or cause centralization of pain (McKenzie self-treatment repeated movements that centralize pain)

Detailed documentation of extent and response to conservative treatment including chiropractor/physical therapy documentation

SOURCE: UPMC Health Plan Policy and Procedure Manual, October 2011: Surgical Management of Low Back Pain
(partial list of considerations prior to spine surgery to determine medical necessity). Complete policy available at

Commenting on the UPMC Health Plan guidelines, Gerard Clum, DC, former president of the World Federation of Chiropractic and Life Chiropractic College West, and current executive committee member of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, stated:

“The UPMC should be congratulated for its leadership is establishing policies to assure that the least invasive and most likely to be successful care strategies, including chiropractic care, are applied for a meaningful period of time before surgical considerations are made. This decision is both an important recognition of the value of chiropractic care in the acute low back pain environment as well as a recognition of the clinical and economic downsides to spinal surgery in this situation.”

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the UPMC Health Plan covers insureds in 15 counties in western Pennsylvania. The plan integrates 20 hospitals, 400 doctors’ offices and outpatient sites.

Chiropractic Services: What the UPMC Health Plan Covers

“It is the policy of UPMC Health Plan to recognize chiropractic services and adjunctive procedures as appropriate and consistent with good medical practice and will provide coverage when the services are medically necessary and covered by the member’s benefit plan for the specific indications detailed in this policy. Coverage is limited to medically necessary services provided by a licensed doctor of chiropractic, within the scope of his/her license.”

“Covered chiropractic services include evaluation and management, manipulation, spinal X-rays, therapeutic exercise, and adjunctive procedures that are appropriate and medically necessary for neuromusculoskeletal conditions. … Indications for Chiropractic Services: Indicated for primary, neuro-musculoskeletal symptoms involving the spine, para-spinal soft tissues, and extremities. Indications for Manipulation: Manipulation is appropriate to restore function that has been reduced or lost by illness or injury. Indications for Adjunctive Procedures: Adjunctive procedures are appropriate to restore function and prevent disability following injury. Indications for Therapeutic Exercise: Indicated for improvement or to restore functional status by building strength, endurance and flexibility of the affected region.”

Many Back pain Sufferers and doctors are recognizing the value in this type of approach to back pain relief for many reasons.  First of all, the risks and success rate of surgery can be daunting to most and surgery doesn’t correct the cause of most back pain.  Many times after surgery, they same bio mechanical problems that caused the back problem in the first place still remain hence the patient still has back pain.   Conservative methods of care such as Chiropractic care and Physical Therapy are more targeted at solving the bio mechanical problems such as spinal misalignment, muscle imbalance, muscle weakness,  and improper movement patterns.  These types of treatment also include a lot of education and stress the importance of long term stretching programs and therapeutic fitness programs that can help patients combat Back Pain over the long haul.

If you are interested in a more natural conservative approach to back pain then give Synergy Institute a call.  Our Professional Chiropractor’s and Physical Therapists have helped many Naperville and Aurora residents get back pain relief.  Call one of our Three convenient locations today.

Top 5 Natural Treatments for Headache Relief!

Get Relief From Headaches Naturally!

There is nothing worse than a splitting headache.  Life can really be difficult, almost impossible at times if you suffer from headaches on a regular basis.  The aching and throbbing make it tough to do anything, not to mention the tight muscles and neck pain that can be associated with a headache.  Life is so much better without a headache.

Headaches come in all shapes and sizes, and there are many different types and causes.  The good news is that for most common headaches, there are some amazing treatments that are all natural and can give you relief without taking medications or having to undergo risky procedures.

I have put together the top 5 natural headache relieving treatments available at Synergy Institute.  These treatments all address the various causes and symptoms of most headaches including sinus headaches, tension headaches, and migraine headaches.

Here are my top 5 Recommended Natural Treatments for Headache Relief.

  1. Chiropractic Care: This is usually where I recommend people start in the quest for headache relief.  A Chiropractor can listen to your symptoms and examine you to see if any of your spinal bones may be out of alignment causing mechanical pressure in the head and neck.  Any spinal misalignment can nerve irritation and tight muscles.   An x-ray is also a valuable part of the examination that allows the Chiropractor to see the exact position of the spinal bines and if there is anything out of alignment.  Chiropractic has been my number one tool in headache relief!
  2. Acupuncture:  Acupuncture has also been very successful with headache relief.  After a consultation and evaluation the acupuncturist then determines a course of action based upon what seems to be out of balance.  The treatment consists of the insertion of very tiny needles into very specific points that allow the body’s energy to move back to normal.  Acupuncture does not hurt and patients usually become more relaxed than ever during treatment.
  3. Diet – Nutrition-Food Sensitivity:  This is a pretty big subject area to cover, but I do want to mention it because it is a very important and even some simple dietary changes can make a huge impact on headache relief.  I will just bring up a few key points to consider.  It is important to identify if the patient is eating foods on a regular basis that they may be causing irritation.  Identifying those offender and removing them for a treatment period can be very effective.  In addition to removing foods that cause sensitivities, it is also important to remove harmful foods like sugars, soda, refined foods, processed foods, tobacco, and chemicals etc. that are being consumed.  Headaches can result when the body becomes toxic or poisoned from these substances.  The next thing to address is eating a balanced diet with lots of vegetables and adequate protein and making sure basic supplements like a high quality multivitamin and fish oil are part of that regimen.  DON’T underestimate the power of the food that you put in your body.
  4. K Laser Therapy:  K Laser Therapy is a new laser treatment that we have been using for many different conditions like joint pain, tight muscles, arthritis, swelling, tendonitis, and bursitis.  It is a class IV laser therapy that reduces inflammation and pain.  It also helps to relax the muscles and quickly break up trigger points in the treated area.  We use a specific headache relief protocol on the head and neck and even have an additional protocol for sinus headache  This treatment is even popular in veterinary medicine to help animals get relief.
  5. Spinal Decompression:  Spinal Decompression has been helpful to patients that have headaches as a result of degenerative disc disease and other disc problems such as herniations and bulges.  The treatment gently and comfortably stretches the spine to remove the compressive force that causes the pinching of the spinal nerves.  After a series of treatments the discs become more hydrated the spaces between the bones increases.  Most of our clients tolerate decompression well and love the increased range of motion they have afterward.

Of course there are many more options for natural headache relief, but these just happen to be my favorite and most common secret weapons in the war against headaches and are always a great place to start.  Each patient is different and we make sure that we are matching up the right treatments for their exact needs.  We only recommend the specific treatments that can be helpful for the individual.

Chiropractic Care Helped Chicago Bulls Star Get Back in the Game Fast!

Chiropractic Care Helps Chicago Bulls Star with Back Pain!

Chiropractic Care Helps Chicago Bulls Star with Back Pain!

Athletes  of are sidelined in many different sport for back pain related injuries and most times don’t get the opportunity to get the most appropriate care right away.  It is a good thing Derek Rose knew the benefit of getting Chiropractic Care right away to help get rid of his back pain and get back on the court.  Imagine the consequences if he did not take the right course of action?

The key to recovering quickly is to immediately uncover what exactly is causing the problem and begin to correct that problem.  In too may cases athletes are given basic therapy and medications to cover up the problem with the hopes that it will just get better.   In other cases they do nothing and just hope it will go away.  The problem with this approach is that spinal misalignments go uncorrected and can get worse in a short period of time.  A simple chiropractic check up can determine if these subluxations or spinal misalignments are present.  When the spinal misalignments are corrected through Chiropractic Care the body can function more efficiently and take the stress off the problem areas.

Rose returns, leads Bulls past Hawks

After missing 5 games with back spasms, he contributes 23 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds

Derrick Rose had never before sat for five straight games in his NBA career, so the deafening roar that drowned out his name after public-address announcer Tommy Edwards began “From Chicago …” didn’t surprise.

But when close to the same roar accompanied Rose merely dribbling on the Bulls’ first possession Monday, the impact of his absence became more fully felt.

His teammates didn’t cheer, at least publicly. They merely benefited from Rose’s aggressive presence that featured 23 points, six assists, five rebounds and four turnovers in the Bulls’ 90-79 matinee victory over Atlanta.

“It was awesome to watch,” Carlos Boozer said.

Rose, who had been sidelined by back spasms, logged close to 35 minutes and, in an atypical move, didn’t appear in the postgame locker room to address reporters. He spoke to ESPN’s Doris Burke on the court afterward.

“The whole week I was seeing a great chiropractor,” Rose told Burke. “Teammates and fans were waiting for me to come back. I was feeling good and just trying to play the way I normally play — aggressive.

“My teammates followed me. Coach did a great job with the game plan. (My back) feels good. I have to put a little ice on there. I should be all right.”

Boozer added 16 points for the Bulls, who have won 13 straight regular-season games following a loss. Joakim Noah rebounded from his rough outing on Saturday to grab 16 rebounds, helping the Bulls to a 51-41 advantage on the boards and 18-4 edge in second-chance points.

But Rose dominated attention. He survived a hard tumble after drawing a foul on Josh Smith for a three-point play midway through the third quarter.

“You don’t want him to change who he is,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “You’re always concerned about health. But a guy could get hurt in practice or shootaround. That’s part of the game.

“He’s done a good job with his rehab. Our trainers have done a great job with him. As long as he’s pain-free and feels 100 percent, we felt comfortable. He met all the criteria that we were looking for him to meet before he played again. So we’re good.”

Actually, not everything was. For the second straight game, the Bulls started slow, forcing Thibodeau to burn a 20-second timeout early in which he blistered the starters. They responded with an 11-0 run as Rose scored nine first-quarter points.

But an eventual 21-point lead with just over 4 minutes to play in the third quarter got quickly whittled to nine by that quarter’s close. Former Bull Jannero Pargo heated up with three 3-pointers.

Then the Hawks, who played without Marvin Williams and with an ineffective Joe Johnson trying to battle through knee soreness, pulled within five in the fourth. Rose almost lost the ball before shoveling it to Luol Deng, whose 3-pointer with 2:59 left marked his first points since the first quarter and provided breathing room.

“Derrick’s explosion was there,” Thibodeau said. “His drives were there. Conditioning-wise, he’s not where he normally is. But that’s to be expected. Overall, I’m very pleased. He said he felt real good out there.”

Chiropractic Care helped Derek Rose, and it can help many other athletes even if they are not famous professionals!  Chiropractic Care is for everyone and is all natural.  The key is to get a Chiropractic Check up right away and do not wait for the problem to progress.  See your Chiropractor Today.

Adjustments From a Chiropractor and Exercises are More Effective Than Pain Pills for Neck Pain Relief.

Neck Pain Naperville and Aurora

Adjustments from a Chiropractor and Exercises are More Effective Than Pain Pills For Neck Pain.

If you are suffering from neck pain then you may want to consider spinal adjustments and therapeutic exercises first  According to the latest research conclusion,  Chiropractic Adjustments and Therapeutic Exercises are more effective for pain relief than taking pain Pills.

Chiropractic Adjustments and Therapeutic Exercises address the cause of neck pain as compared to making the pain symptoms with pain medication.  By fixing the problem, normal function can be restored.  Over time, due to mechanical stress and injury the spinal bones can become misaligned and begin to put pressure on the spinal nerves and cause the surrounding muscles to lock up.

If these spinal problems go undetected for long periods of time, permanent degeneration of the spine can result.  The best course of treatment is to fix the problem  and not just cover it up with pain pills.

Most Pain Medications have a long list of potential side effects, many of which are significant.  The dangerous side effects can impair your health even further.

Neck Pain: Chiropractors, Exercise Better Than Medication, Study Says

When it comes to neck pain the best medicine is no medicine at all according to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, tracked 272 patients with recent-onset neck pain who were treated using three different methods:
A Chiropractor
After 12 weeks the patients who used a chiropractor or exercised were more than twice as likely to be pain free compared to those who relied on medicine.

The patients treated by a chiropractor experienced the highest rate of success with 32 percent saying they were pain free, compared to 30 percent of those who exercised. Only 13 percent of patients treated with medication said they no longer experienced pain.

“Doesn’t surprise me a bit,” Dr. Lee Green, professor of family medicine at the University of Michigan told ABC News. “Neck pain is a mechanical problem, and it makes sense that mechanical treatment works better than a chemical one.”

Dr. John Messmer who specializes in family medicine at Penn State College of Medicine agrees.

“I always prescribe exercises and/or physical therapy for neck pain,” he wrote. “I also tell patients that the exercises are the treatment and the drugs are for the symptoms.”

The exercises prescribed to patients in the study were simple and designed to be performed at home with the help of instructional photos.

Synergy Institute has been offering the best in Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy for over ten years and have found that combining both of these effective techniques for neck pain relief work very well.  It is our mission to help people heal and recover as fast as possible from conditions such as back pain and neck pain without using harmful medications or risky surgery.

Chronic neck problems can result in severe neck pain, headaches, radiculopathy into the arms and hands, disc bulges, disc herniations, and disc degeneration.  Periodic spinal check ups can help detect mechanical problems in the neck and upper back.  Correcting Spinal Problems when they are small can prevent permanent spinal degeneration and injury.

Call Synergy Institute today for a free spinal evaluation if you or someone you know are suffering from neck pain.  We can help you get neck pain relief with spinal adjustments and therapeutic neck exercise.

Back Pain Relief

Five Helpful Tips For Back Pain Relief

Tips For Back Pain Relief

Many people suffer from back pain.  Matter of fact, most people you know suffer from back pain.  It is one of the most common reasons for missed work.

The alarming statistics shed light on to the fact that we need to employ better strategies at combating back pain.  Rather than focus on creating new treatments for back pain, it is more beneficial if each individual would take some simple measures to protect their back and spine.

I will list the top five ways to reduce and prevent back pain.

1.  Stretch every day at least two times.  You don’t need to stretch for house, just enough to stretch the major muscle groups each a minimum of sixty seconds.

2.  Use proper ergonomics to eliminate daily repetitive stresses being placed on the spine and back.  Evaluate lifting techniques, car seat settings, and any other activity you do on a regular basis.

3.  Proper nutrition is also very critical for the cells that heal and repair on an ongoing basis.  Drink 64 ounces of water, eat a minimum of half of your body weight in grams of protein and eliminate inflammatory foods like refined, processed foods, and sugars.  Diets are more important than most people think.

4.  Regular cardiovascular activity also helps the muscles and joins move better.  Moderate exercise that does not increase stress on the joints in recommended.  Thirty minute sessions three to five times per week is best.  Make sure you are comfortable doing the exercise and select types of cardio you feel best doing.

5.  Get a spinal check up to identify problems before you have symptoms.  Just like you would get your teeth checked to prevent cavities for progressing, you also want to get your spine checked.  Problems begin long before the symptoms occur.

Take time to implement these simple instructions.  The Synergy Institute can help you with a stretching program and nutritional advice.  You can also come in for a FREE consultation to learn more about having a spinal check up.

Attention Naperville and Aurora Golfers, Find out How you can Improve Your Swing, Lower Your handicap, and Play Without Pain!

Is your back , neck, arm, or leg pain ruining your golf game?

It starts out as just a twinge, but by the last 5 holes it becomes unbearable. You’re hesitant to really swing that new driver for all it’s worth – fearing that you’ll injure your back even worse .  Or maybe you’ve had to stop playing golf completely because your back pain and sciatica are so bad.

Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough Vicodin, Soma or some other pill. But the real problem is while you play through all “numbed up”, you are definitely injuring your back even more….without knowing it.

Friends May Tell You Back Pain Comes From a Bad Swing…They’re Wrong!

If your drives are getting shorter and shorter and your putts less smooth, it has more to do with your back than your swing.

Studies show that about one-third of touring PGA and LPGA players are playing with back pain right now. These pros have the best swing mechanics in the world, yet still have back pain!

In addition to that, another study conducted at the University of Calgary showed… “Pain-free golfers demonstrated over twice as much trunk flexion velocity on the downswing”.

This means the less back pain you have, the more flexible your spine is and the faster you can swing – hitting the ball straighter and farther.

Over the past eleven years Synergy Institute has  helped hundreds of golfer’s in Naperville, Bolingbrook, Plainfield, and Aurora feel better, return to the course and hit longer, straighter shots.  Synergy Institute combines a multidisciplinary approach with advanced pain relieving technology to get pain relief naturally.

Do Any Of These Conditions Affect Your Golf Game?

  • Back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Disc bulging/herniations
  • Muscle spasms

If the answer is yes then you need to call the Synergy Institute Right away!
